Patients around the world suffer from tissue fibrosis, a deadly yet common pathological condition defined as excessive production of extracellular matrix components often as a result of tissue damage, cancer, atherosclerosis, and many more chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Unfortunately, fibrosis remains to be a irreversible with no established cure to date. Therefore, it is critical to be able to detect and diagnosis fibrosis at an early stage and delay its progression.
Through dedicated collaborative research involving our lab and the Yonsei Institute of Basic Science (IBS), we have finally unveiled an innovative strategy of fibrosis diagnosis by utilizing magneto-gas vesicles that can produce differential ultrasound signals depending on the mechanical properties of its surrounding tissues at a highly sensitive level! We hope this breakthrough will become the frontier of future fibrosis diagnosis in the medical field and assist in developing effective treatment strategies.
